"Conversing with a Silent Marsh Harrier" for string quintet
In February 2020 on the eve of the great coronavirus pandemic I composed this movement in a single day. The mesmerising 18 minutes is built entirely on just one theme repeated over and over, each instrument (except the double bass) displacing each new entry by its own set time. The pizzicato bass provides a continuous underlay. Thus despite the nonstop repetitions the whole ensemble never repeats.
While I did enjoy the mental challenge, especially of creating a theme that would work in so many combinations with itself, this is not my kind of music....
