Commanded Time
Just for a moment I commanded time
I warmed in the stillness of its sun
For a while my mind began to climb
Stiff legs grew strong.
As I sprang up my mind took leave to run
Through freshsown fields of children’s voices
Amongst them mine bright treble full of fun
Pure fun, sweet song.
With salty tears of joy my soul rejoices
Chasing half awakened shadows of my dawn
That shared with me such sundrenched choices
These were not wrong.
How did I not discern the gathering storm
That drowned my perfect little world
That for my childhood’s overfamiliar form
Time was not long.
Bubbles wobbling in the evening breeze
Begin their soft descent to earth
My childish hands stretch out to seize
Each rounded breath
Iridescent oily sheen
They burst, one by one,
Each a moment of childish fun.
The autumn airs grow keen.
